From the Warrior Dash to the Tough Mudder to our own DCC Challenger Series, more and more DCC athletes are tackling competitions most "normal" people think are more than a little crazy.
The latest example is how Rocky Colangelo spent his Saturday. He finished in the top third at CrossFit Overdose on January 28, competing against some of the top CrossFit athletes in Ontario.
"Competition was a lot tougher than last year," says Rocky. Weights were higher and the workouts "are always a killer."
Rocky's best event was doing three rounds for time of:
- 5 thrusters (front squat plus push press) at a staggering 165 lbs
- 20 burpees
- 100 double unders (rope skips in which the rope makes two revolutions for every skip)
Rocky completed this in just over 11 minutes.
And that was just one of four events.
Other events included:
- For time: 15 squat cleans @ 205 lbs. and 30 X 40" box jumps
- As many rounds as possible in 7:00 minutes of: 50 foot, 125 lbs plate carries, with two 45 lbs plates and one 35 lbs plate
- As many rounds as possible in 12:00 minutes of: a circuit that included bar muscle ups, handstand pushups, air squats and rope climbs
Rocky calls the event "a great experience" even though he hoped to do better and feels he "could have pushed harder." Among the nasty surprises: how difficult it was to do 40 inch box jumps in weightlifting shoes, immediately following 205 lb. squat cleans.
Rocky took a break from Blaise's High Intensity classes and prepared for the event by training at DCC 4-5 days a week, focusing on Olympic lifts and such skills as muscle ups and butterfly pull ups. The conditioning paid off. Rocky says it was "very rewarding" to fight through the tough workouts and make it to the end.
Rocky's next event will be the DCC Challenger on March 18, 2012.
