Women, Don’t be Afraid to Lift Some Weight on July 28th, 2010 at 11:52 am

Time after time I come across females who are terrified of lifting weight for the fear of looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Ask yourself, do i have a beard, an “Adam’s Apple”, or a voice so deep it makes James Earl Jones sound like a preschooler. If your answer is no, then you have nothing to worry about. The female sex does not have the hormones (mainly testosterone) needed for hypertrophy. Following are some main reasons why you should include weight training into your training schedule.

I have a fully referenced article that I am going to post in a week or two, but first I wanted to get you thinking.  Below I have suggested some of the reason’s I believe resistance training to be beneficial and even important for women, but I want to know your questions, concerns and thoughts.

Here are a few reasons why I think women should not be afraid to lift weights as a form of exercise.

  1. Helps prevent Osteoporosis
  2. Helps prevent type 2 Diabetes.
  3. Promotes correct posture.
  4. Eliminate unnecessary fat by using it as fuel
  5. Increased overall strength levels
  6. Cosmetics
  7. Helps with sleep managment

Do you think weight training is good or bad for women? Share your thoughts and experience!

I look forward to answering all of your questions and debunking the myths that come with female weight training.

Infrared Sauna Coming to DCC!! on May 28th, 2010 at 7:15 am

If you’ve never heard of the many great benefits that come with an Infrared Sauna, then NOW is the time to make your way down to DCC!

This Friday, May 28th, you can enjoy all of the detoxifying and relaxation benefits that come with an Infrared Sauna treatment.

DCC has chosen a SaunaRay brand sauna, which is the leader when it comes to safety, purity and according to medical doctors, naturopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists, Infrared Sauna treatment is one of the fastest, most proven and most comfortable ways to improve and stay healthy in today’s toxic world.

These Saunas are used by The University of Toronto, Harvard Medical School and Sunnybrook Hospital and were recently chosen by the head physical therapist for the Ottawa Senators NHL team!

PROVEN RESULTS!

Just a few of the ailments that Infrared Sauna treatments can help YOU with;

  • Heart Disease: The Mayo Clinic studies in the 1990s showed all 37 participants afflicted with congestive heart failure – the inoperable kind of heart disease – displayed improvement and some even got off their medications after about 6 weeks of regular sauna therapy at low heat.
  • Asthma: Dr. Jozef Krop (a SaunaRay customer) showed in sauna therapy studies in the 1980s the chronic asthma in a patient exposed to industrial chemicals from the petroleum industry was alleviated in about 4 weeks. SaunaRay customers have reported going from using an asthma inhaler 3 times per week, down to 3 times per year. That’s after about 2 months of regular sauna use.
  • Psoriasis and other skin disorders: Psoriasis like many skin disorders is actually a liver disorder. It happens when certain toxins from food cannot be normally eliminated via the liver, so they’re sent out to the fat cells for future elimination via sweat. When they hit the cells just under the skin, the body begins to over produce skin cells by a factor of 10,000 times. The toxins come out on dead skin cells.By sweating profusely and regularly, these toxins are instead carried out on the droplets of sweat and the symptoms of psoriasis are alleviated. The discomfort that lasted a lifetime is so relieved that psoriasis patients are among our most joyous customers.
  • Arthritis: The heaters in the corners deeply penetrate major joints and aid in soft tissue repair. The energy from the heat helps to break up Lactic Acid which can gather and cause muscle cramping. The soft tissue, and Connective Tissue which concerns arthritics, is made more supple and pliable.
  • Cancer: There are practitioners using SaunaRay for Breast Cancer treatment but this is in conjunction with many other therapies, sometimes even with chemo therapy and surgery. So it is not to be considered as a cure for Cancer.…However… Every doctor who has studied the material on Far Infrared Sauna states unequivocally that regular sessions will expunge toxins known to cause cancer. Including Lead, Mercury, plastics and pthalates, dioxin, pesticides, and heavy metals.
  • Weight Loss: In a letter published in the 1970s in the Journal of the American Medical Association it was revealed that 30 minutes of profuse sweating on its own is enough to burn up to 600 calories.

“Our biggest success with the sauna, comes from clients who have plateaued during weight loss. They find that with sauna usage they are able to overcome the plateau and shed more pounds!” - Lisa Squire RMT – Stayner Massage Therapy – Stayner, Ont.

Today, SaunaRay’s uniquely warm heating system and self-ventilating window allow people to sweat for 30-60 minutes without overheating their core body temperature, so you can actually burn those calories just by sitting.

“This is the most effective treatment I’ve ever seen. Who can’t just sit there? It’s so easy!”-Alexis, SaunaRay customer, Toronto, Ont.

Call today at 416-929-7812 to book your Infrared Sauna treatment and take your health to a whole new level! Special 25% OFF FIRST 10 Session (limited time Only)

“Spring is Detox Time!” on April 22nd, 2010 at 2:59 pm

Your liver performs more than 400 different jobs!  In addition to its function as a filter to cleanse the body of toxins, the liver is also the main organ that produces energy in our bodies.  It does so by regulating the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, hormonal balance, fat burning and blood sugar.  Because of its role in metabolism, a toxic liver cannot efficiently burn body fat, making liver toxicity a common weight loss stumbling block.  Thus, periodic detoxification not only helps restore health and vitality but also makes it easier for you to shed those unwanted extra pounds.

Health food store shelves and the internet are bombarded with a myriad of different types of  detox and liver cleansing supplements and programs which can make choosing the right detox a daunting task.  Information can be confusing and lead to the selection of a program that is not right for your needs or that may even cause an imbalance that can potentially lead to improper detoxification and adverse reactions.

So…How toxic are you?  Is toxicity hampering you from achieving your health and fitness goals?  Come take a detoxification questionnaire and learn the why, when and how of detoxification with Shannon Conrad RHN/RHOP on Tuesday April 27th at 5:30 pm.

Heart Month on February 15th, 2010 at 8:59 am

Heart Month

With February comes everyone’s favourite celebration or perhaps it should be.  You guessed it. February is Heart month.

If you’ve never taken the time to consider the rates of obesity and the increasing obesity in children, maybe this is the month.  From 1979, 3% of Canadian youth aged 2 to 17 were obese. By 2004 that number ballooned to 8% - an estimated 500,000 obese! An additional 18% of Canadian children and youth are considered overweight. These stats together result in more than 26% (1/3) of Canadian children being either overweight or obese. (more…)

As a Personal Trainer and Business Consultant to the health and fitness industry, the options and choices available to me for ongoing education and certification are many. However, I have been a client and fan of the DCC approach for several years, so when they announced their Level 1 Certification Course, I was immediately interested. The multi-disciplinary approach to training and lifestyle is tremendously unique in my experience, and I would highly recommend this certification course to any fitness professional who values a unique balance of science and fun when working with their clients.
